Gitta Stadelmann is the daughter of the whimsical animal painter Sebastian Stadelmann. Gitta sings and dances all day during her domestic chores and is accidentally noticed through the open window by George Harding, an operetta composer. Delighted by Gitta's talent, the latter promises to help her overcome her father's opposition to land her a career in the theater.
