Man and Maid plot

Nicholas Thormonde hires Alathea Bulteel as his secretary. She is a charming young woman, but she deliberately dresses very neatly and modestly. Although attracted to her employer, she is disappointed by his relationship with the worldly Suzette. Thormonde falls for Alathea, but she misunderstands his intentions and resigns. When her father runs up debts due to his gambling addiction, Alathea nevertheless agrees to a marriage of convenience. Gradually, the couple comes to realize that they harbor genuine feelings for each other.
