Les Pétroleuses (1971)

Well, there is very little one can write about Les Petroleuses. It is really nothing more than a vehicle for the beauty (and not the acting performances) of Bardot and Cardinale. Nevertheless, Cardinale manages to hold her own as an actress as best she can, in my opinion, in a film like this. Bardot is a mediocre actress, and personally, I don't even find her all that attractive (I believe this is also the first film I've seen with her). We don't need to waste words on the rest of the film. The filmmakers didn't either.

A comedic western with a story that the more serious westerns aren't necessarily always better at. The film is primarily lighthearted and entertaining. It reminds me a bit of the films with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. But with a woman instead of fists. As has been said here before, it is mainly Cardinale who steals the show, and slightly less Bardot. But it works with both ladies, and it is of course nice to see them together in a film for a change. This film will never make it onto top lists, but I did enjoy it.

BB and CC. The oil girls.

All clichés piled high with a twist, from French-speaking cowgirls to a Russian playing a Native American spouting Chinese-sounding proverbs – le chemin du plaisir ne va jamais a ligne droite, indeed. Nevertheless, the film doesn't exactly take a long detour; after all, it is about our two heroines and nothing else, and they don't hold back on that from the very beginning. Unserious entertainment where, apart from the two capital letters, only Spitting Bull really has anything interesting to say – but what a blunder that it isn't even listed correctly in the credits. So, that’s the kind of film it is. Still enjoyable to watch, a pleasure to see, although I would have preferred to see a bit more substance in the roles of BB and CC.
