Heimweh nach Drüben plot

GDR citizen Stephan (Wolfgang Stumph) is allowed to travel to his brother in the FRG just before his wedding to Eva (Katrin Saß). He does not know that his son and his wife are fleeing the GDR in a hot air balloon. Stephan is seen as an accomplice and is no longer allowed to enter the GDR by the East German authorities. In his desperation, he decides to flee from West to East, unaware that his beloved is fleeing from East to West at the same time.
