Dr. Josef Rittenhaus is asked by his friend Waldstein to consider a proposal from Countess von Nessa to donate money and land for a new sanatorium. Meanwhile, Rittenhaus's wife, Laura, feels neglected and finds herself in the company of Carl Tanzer, whom she rejects despite his advances. Laura tries to arouse her husband's jealousy with a fake letter.
