Lum and Abner's shop in Pineridge, Arkansas is the focal point of the village, where everyone hangs out. The shop also houses the post office, where Alice, the niece of the richest man in the area, works as a postmaster. She has a relationship with the local doctor's son Kenneth, whom she wants to marry, but her aunt, who is arguing with his father, does everything to prevent this. Kenneth works as a doctor in a nearby village but does not earn enough to support a family.
