Destinées plot
Three short stories set in wartime, in which the women take the lead. 1) The American Elisabeth Whitefield goes on a pilgrimage to Italy to return the body of her husband, who was killed in February 1944 by the Germans, to his homeland. She learns that shortly before his death he had a mistress, a young peasant girl, and that he fathered a child with her. 2) In April 1430, Joan of Arc has doubts about her mission. In a fortified farm near Compiègne she sees Captain Baretta again, one of her former brothers in arms. He confirms to her that his soldiers no longer trust her. In the farm a child has just died without being baptized. However, Jeanne manages to resuscitate the child and ensures that it is baptized. The miracle causes the troops to regain confidence in her and to leave with her. But Jeanne knows that her last days are numbered. 3) Athens, 411 BC. The war with Sparta has been going on for a century now. Lysistrata takes charge of her fellow citizens and proposes that the women stop making love to their husbands. Discouraged, the inhabitants of Athens decide to make peace with Sparta.
