In early 20th-century New York, Amy and her brother and sister live with their nanny, while her mother and father battle disease in the tropics. One night, just before her parents come home, she sees a play and is convinced she knows all about the dark sides of life. She becomes convinced that her mother is having an affair and tries everything to get her out of it.
