Emergency plot

During the reign of Indira Gandhi, Indians lived under a state of emergency for almost two years between 1975 and 1977. The government used this to suspend basic rights such as freedom of the press and to rule from above without parliamentary control. Only a heavy election defeat for Gandhi's party ended the state of emergency.
