Emma, a sex doll designer and comic artist, is making a comic about film director Edward who is making a film in which model Michelle writes a book about a sex doll designer named Emma. The film follows three storylines that are connected to each other. Zoom is a film within an animation within a film. Or something like that.

Pedro Morelli's film changes constantly in terms of optics and narrative. At times you get confused and you don't know exactly which story comes from which story. There is help. In Emma's storyline the images are realistic and the colours powerful. Edward's story is consistently shown as animation. And Michelle writes her book in Brazil in realistic images in which warm colours or monochrome use of colour dominate.

The tone in the three storylines differs. The animation is mainly humorous in tone. In Michelle's story dark influences dominate, which become even darker when Edward tries to solve his sex problems in his animation. Emma's storyline is rather light-hearted. This is mainly due to the appearance of Alison Pill as Emma. Adorned with dark glasses, she plays the entertaining character Emma in a clumsy and shy way.

The pace could have been a bit higher here and there, but the film definitely offers fun viewing. A bit absurd, humorous and satirical. Three amusing storylines that are interconnected and come together at the end. Quite ok. Zoom is a fun experiment.

A film within a film within a film, and then within a comic and a book. You'd lose count if you had less. Normally, I'm not a fan of these kinds of constructions, because they usually just signal a lack of inspiration. But this strange case shows that you can also go the other way, because if there's one thing this film has, it's an excess of inspiration. Too many good ideas, more than can fit into a single film.

What makes up for a lot is that the tone in almost every storyline is positive, investigative, and exploratory. And naturally, because if you can undo everything with a stroke of the pen, all possibilities are open, and the world is like an oyster wide open to escape. But not all the threads that begin the weave make it to the end, and if you're left confused by the title sequence, you've been paying attention.

Director Morelli delivers a truly unique piece here, and with the talent of the actors, it even comes out quite well. It's certainly confusing, and it helps to check the plot summary on Wikipedia. But there's no answer there either, and your opinion isn't exactly a predetermined question; you'll have to figure that out for yourself.
