Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by the evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. Smurfette decides to go on a mission with the other Smurfs to the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what their destiny is to save the universe.

In the same week that Superman showed how to breathe new life into a dying franchise, this reboot of an already shaky franchise completely missed the mark. Hip dancing Smurfs, a few musical numbers, and a pop soundtrack by Rihanna aren’t the best ideas. Adding Razamel [JP Karliak], the brother of Gargamel [JP Karliak], is a rip-off from Despicable Me 3, and portraying Gargamel as a wimp is simply a joke. Papa Smurf [John Goodman] is kidnapped by Razamel, who hopes to uncover the location of a magical book [Octavia Spencer] that will allow him to claim proverbial “world domination.” Smurfette [Rihanna] and a nameless Smurf [James Corden], who has yet to discover his talent, lead the rescue. The writers think they're being funny by randomly introducing new Smurfs (including Sound Effects Smurf, based on Michael Onslow in Police Academy). Thankfully, it doesn't last too long.
