After her mother's death, 16-year-old Lia has to spend her summer with her grandmother, who lives according to the Gwich'in culture. In desperation, Lia steals a boat to return to her city life and gets lost. She encounters the Gwich'in hunter Alfred who hesitantly takes her under his wing. When he is seriously injured in a confrontation with a bear, Lia must do everything in his power to save both their lives.
