Caine is completely grounded when he is stranded in a small town by the sea. In the harbor lies the yacht of a certain Professor Malare, who pretends to fish and dive for pleasure, but in reality is on the trail of a sunken treasure of gold. Caine, who has been trying to smuggle weapons, wants to get away at all costs, especially since the police are clearly watching him. Now a native boy, who worked for the professor, happened to be killed by a shark. The professor and his assistant, somewhat reluctantly because they have no other choice, hire Caine.

The authentic shark attacks are spectacularly depicted and the underwater images are a nice reunion, but those are all the compliments I have for Shark! have left. Apparently director Samuel Fuller was dealing with a chaotic production and disagreed with the end result. I am actually inclined to agree with his anger, because the makers (whoever they may be) have mainly made a very boring piece of work. Burt Reynolds is completely colorless in the leading role and the story is truly incomprehensible. The abysmal visual quality also makes the whole thing absolutely not fun to sit through, because a lot of images look blurry and washed out. Shark! is trying to reach the final. to surprise the viewer with plot twists, but these are so bland that the final effect mainly achieves the opposite. A shame, because the film is certainly not without good scenes (as my first sentence suggests). However, the parts with actual sharks can be counted on one hand and these are the moments that Fuller deserves.
