La Perla plot
"Steinbeck's most Talked-About story!"
Quino is a Mexican diver who is very poor. He, his wife Juana and his son Coyotito live in a modest hut on the beach. One morning, Coyotito is bitten by a scorpion. When they go to the doctor they are sent away with an excuse because they don't have enough money. Juana and Quino decide to take their canoe out to sea and dive for oysters. All the luck is with them as they find a giant pearl. The news spreads quickly, the doctor suddenly comes to their cabin to help Coyotito on the condition that they pay the bill as soon as possible. They promise that they will settle the costs once the pearl is sold. But in the village all pearl buyers agree to keep the price as low as possible. When Quino is attacked one day, he kills his attackers in a storm. His brother argues that it is best if they leave the village as soon as possible. Gradually they begin to realize that that pearl is causing them more and more misery.
