What a mess.

It had been a long time since I had seen a Verhoeven, it recently appeared on Netflix and although I am not so great with the Middle Ages, I was promised a raw, brutal film. Not really.

It still seemed pretty romanticized to me, just not the fluffy version. The version in which everyone was constantly looting and eating richly filled tables with greasy food in the most peasant ways. In the midst of it all: Leigh and Hauer who completely fail to bring their characters to life. The third in the triangle is already crying.

Visually dull and uninteresting, the soundtrack also added very little. Verhoeven doesn't show too much of his directing talent here either, it just muddles up a bit and despite frantic attempts to make it a bit more interesting, it was occasionally a good fight against heavy eyelids.

Man, Verhoeven is really hit & miss and this one is especially a lot of the latter. And how Hauer ever made it beyond the NL borders is also a mystery to me, what a non-actor.

Good film in which a band of robbers plunders what there is to loot during the Middle Ages. This first foreign production by Paul Verhoeven is an adventurous whole. Nice and rough and some nice action scenes. In terms of story, it is not too much, but the film has a good pace.

No, no great Verhoeven, this Dutch-American collaboration and his first international production. He could count on a few confidants in his crew, such as Rutger Hauer and Jan De Bont. The real heroine of the film is Jennifer Jason Leigh as Agnes, who cunningly uses her charms to get through her captivity. She can share her body with other men, but her heart is for one man.

Verhoeven opposes the romanticization of the Middle Ages. No heroism, no chivalrous bravado and modest damsels. The mercenaries led by Martin, his unscrupulous brutes and the "man of God" who lug around with them is no better. The women are all portrayed as opportunistic whores who bind themselves to the alpha males for their own survival/survival.

Verhoeven's vision of man in this time period (life is survival) seemed to me more important than the scant story itself, and maybe he is a bit right, who knows? Not a film I want to review, but Verhoeven knows how to tackle it.
