The Contender plot
To earn some extra money so he can send his son to military school, truck driver Gary Farrel becomes an amateur boxer. His success in that area convinces him to take up the sport full-time, and soon he is fighting his way up to where he becomes a contender for the heavyweight championship. However, his chance for the title is jeopardized when he starts dating a beautiful blonde and gets a taste of the good life of nightclubs, parties and booze.
