This is sort of what Transformers could - and should - have been. Entertaining, with great action by a director a thousand times more talented and tasteful than Michael Bay,

It already starts with Tim Riggins - largely with a cropped haircut - as the main character. That man has a certain air that I like. Not only a handsome head, but also a somewhat mischievous, nonchalant look that is wonderfully refreshing and never irritating. Rihanna isn't irritating either, so that's commendable. And even Liam Neeson knows what kind of movie he's in. He has his charisma and natural authority of his own, the somewhat loose acting fits in perfectly with this in this print. And despite the cliché images, delays, and sometimes ugly colors, the music is quite decent. Better than that tasteless noise that Bay puts in his movies. Lots of AC/DC and Fortunate Son at the end - then a film can't really be broken.

It is typical that in that entire first part there is hardly any threat, as there was in ID4. Only when those things have landed (why always crash in big cities, you wonder) does the film really get going. But I still missed a continuous tension or real emotion. It's entertaining, but no more than that. Incidentally, the directing is sometimes wrong. Certainly towards the end, after 10 minutes, you are cut to another location and you think: damn, they were also participating. That could have been a little tighter. And the film fifteen minutes shorter was also allowed.

And the action itself? Which is fine, as long as you accept the premise of strong alien craft. No human falls from 40 meters high, through three glass ceilings and then get up with a murderously serious face without a scratch. No, the action is very believable. In addition, it is fairly well-arranged without hyper-montage.

All in all, very entertaining. Pure no nonsense, but made by a director who knows how to do it. 3.5*.

“I've never seen an alien.”

Bombastic nonsense. The movie is too long, has a really bad script and the whole idea of making a movie about the game naval battle is laughable. But it's all quite entertaining. Battleship has humor, dry one-liners, rousing action scenes, cool guys and gorgeous women. Exactly what I expected. Peter Berg sometimes seems to want something more, but luckily he changes his mind every time and throws in another action scene. Cobbler, stick to your last I would say.

Saving the world is one thing...my daughter is quite another

Real Veronica film (explosions, machos, hot chicks...) with a visibly high Michael Bay level, but it's all done much nicer. Strange is of course that it is really based on the board game sea battle. But it shouldn't spoil the Independence Day-esque fun. That it's naval propaganda .... well otherwise you can't use those very expensive ships. Fortunately, the typical irritability of Bay films was also missing, often that super clumsy stuff.

Very entertaining with enough humor and it looks quite nice. The designs of the aliens and their weaponry are also nicely conceived. There is also some creativity in how the aliens are fought.

Great cast further, with some eye candy (Rihanna and that blonde). I especially missed Skarsgard too much after the first half.

A small thing is that I didn't find the use of Creedence at the end very original, that song was also used in Die Hard 4 in the ending credits.
