The first reviews are in for Alien: Earth and some critics are describing it as the best piece of media in the franchise for years.

There have been seven movies produced in the main franchise so far - Alien, Aliens, Alien3, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant and Alien: Romulus.

Alien: Earth, created by Noah Rawley, is the first live-action series in the franchise and it will debut on FX next week.

The official premise reads:

'When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, Wendy and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat.'

It stars Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, Adarsh Gourav, Kit Young, David Rysdahl and Babou Ceesay among others.

Alien: Earth reviews

"Andor for Alien, Hawley’s series is a rare prequel that serves to enrich its source material, breathing new life into a once-tired franchise. This is the Alien resurrection we’ve long been waiting for." - Empire.

"As he did with Fargo, Hawley invented an Alien show that is faithful to the movies while exploring original ideas within. There is more connective tissue to the Alien movies, with the creature itself and broader mythology addressed, but Hawley has enough ideas of his own to warrant investing an hour a week." - UPI.

"Alien: Earth, the latest in the long running franchise built on the exoskeleton of one of the scariest movie monsters ever created, drops its first season with a confident and vibesy evolution. Simultaneously providing fans with the eggs (Easter and Xenomorph) they expect, and shedding concerns of fitting into continuity, Noah Hawley has made an amazing piece of science fiction on the strength of solid production and creature design, an incredible cast." - IGN.

"For the most part, this is a pretty propulsive series, and even the episodes of 'downtime' are filled with engaging drama and compelling philosophical musings. It's also helped by the fact that all of this takes place alongside a hugely impressive mix of practical and digital effects, as well as with some stunning production design." - RadioTimes.

"A heady, sprawling, occasionally unwieldy but eventually thrilling epic about personhood, hubris and, of course, the primal pleasure of watching people get absolutely rocked by space monsters." - The Hollywood Reporter.
