Assault on Arkham tries way too hard to be edgy, but comes across as all the more childish because of it.

The group of misfits calling themselves the Suicide Squad can't hold a candle to the established names who appear and take over the screen during the film. I do have to say, though, that I quite enjoyed several Squad members' heads exploding in succession. Deadshot and Harley Quinn get the most action, but I have to say, this version of Harley is a bit of a letdown for me. I don't know, they're trying to make her a bit too dark and strange, just like in the comics and the Rocksteady video game series, which this animation seems to be largely based on.

As expected, things really get going when Batman and the Joker get involved. The action then becomes quite spectacular, and Mister J. shows why he's such an iconic figure; in any form, he remains the best of the Batman villains, and one of the best characters in comics and popular culture in general. Batman pulls off some spectacular stunts and proves his coolness once again. We also get cameos from many of the bad guys, including Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and Bane, who are a breath of fresh air compared to the dull members of the Suicide Squad.

I found the first part of this film quite annoying (partly because of Amanda Waller, whom I haven't even mentioned yet), but as the story progressed and the bodies of mainly the Suicide Squad started piling up, I started to get more into it. That's why I gave it a slightly higher rating, but not a passing grade.

Poor.

I briefly watched it as a prelude to Suicide Squad, but it's a rather dull affair, with the Suicide Squad members themselves being a huge disappointment. The roles of Batman and—how could it be otherwise—the Joker are much more enjoyable, and cameos from people like Poison Ivy are also a nice touch.

Hopefully David Ayer's live-action attempt will be better, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Great animated film. Don't be fooled by Batman's name in the title: this is essentially a Suicide Squad film, not a Batman film. I really enjoyed the suspense of the Suicide Squad's break-in at Arkham Asylum. The scenes with the Joker are also very well done. Harley Quinn is also a very likable character in this film.

It's refreshing that it doesn't immediately revolve around Batman. The feathered hero even bothers at times. The Suicide Squad works perfectly on its own. The animation is a nice mix of action and humor. The quality isn't exactly top-notch, and the story is a bit simple, but it has real potential. Great characters, by the way. Batman isn't necessary. Some cameos are appropriate, though. It's a film you won't rate highly, but you can still enjoy it.

Seen on Blu-ray. The story primarily revolves around the Suicide Squad, primarily Deadshot and Harley Quinn, with Batman himself in a supporting role. In the film, the Suicide Squad, a group of six criminals, is sent by Amanda Waller to break into Arkham Asylum. There, they must battle the institution's inmates and Batman as they attempt to complete their mission to recover information stolen by the Riddler. Meanwhile, the Joker has hidden a bomb somewhere.

What was especially enjoyable was the mature style, with brutal violence and blood, exploding heads, nudity, and sex. The Joker was a standout stylistically, though it's a shame he didn't get as much screen time. There were also some great cameos from Poison Ivy, Bane, and Two-Face.

Two years later, of course, the live action film Suicide Squad was released.
