Because I'm in a generous mood, three stars. Had expected a bit more from this, but it has become a rather dry intention, without too many surprises. Beautifully shot images, that's for sure, and the ladies (particularly Page) act very well, but after seeing them you mainly wonder: what's the point?.... It all looks so aimless.

Doesn't film have a feminist twist? Under these difficult circumstances, the two sisters have been given an exemplary character from the director. The young men are getting a lot better off. It is that in his short father role Rennie radiates all goodness, otherwise we would have had to conclude that Rozema is a moderate version of Marleen Gorris.

Well, in the end it's all too insignificant to worry about. Into the Forest is above all a film with the apocalypse as its starting point, which in my opinion can take over from Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, as being the most tame print made on this subject. If we are heading towards our demise like this, something isn't right, then better take a look at something infantile like Independence Day.

Why are you surprised about that John? It is not a widely acclaimed film. It gets quite a bit of appreciation, but also bad reviews.

Personally I found him disappointing. Not because little happens, that's not a requirement for me in a film. But because there was so little development and it seemed to go nowhere. The ladies played well. Page really is a lot better than Wood, I thought. But I missed the psychological stress of what's happening. As long as without electricity and alone in the woods, that does something to you and changes you. It was that aspect that attracted me when I decided to watch this film. But you don't see much of it and the whole survival is very easy.

I also thought it was a shame that the film was shot in the beautiful Canadian forests and that they don't do anything with it. It is background wallpaper in a few scenes that could have happened in the barn, so to speak. Missed opportunity.

Overall, I didn't think it was great. The casual atmosphere didn't fit the story and the story lacked direction. The ending felt like they'd stopped doing it halfway through filming.

So only 2 stars.

A widow, Robert [Callum Keith Rennie] lives with his two estranged daughters Eva [Evan Rachel Wood] and Nell [Ellen Page] in a house deep in the woods. Eva is an aspiring dancer and Nell goes to college, but their plans are shattered when a protracted blackout apparently hits the entire country. When Robert is fatally injured in an accident, the two sisters are completely dependent on each other to survive.
A fantastic acting duel between two of the most talented actresses of their generation in a film that smoothly navigates between family drama and thriller, helped by an atmospheric soundtrack and the moody score by Max Richter. Director/screenwriter Patricia Rozema, who based her screenplay on Jean Hegland's novel of the same name, has interesting things to say about the importance of communication (music plays a key role and the scene where the sisters watch family movies is a dramatic climax), but mainly works as a family drama about two sisters who are forced by a confluence of circumstances to face and process their shared grief and then continue together. The rape scene is one of the most effective of its kind.
