The story focuses on 16-year-old Marieme, who lives in a rule-governed environment. The censorship exercised by the neighborhood she lives in, the boys' rules and her poor school performance. But when she comes into contact with a group of girls who have won their freedom, everything changes. She embraces the code of the street, violence and friendship to make the most of her childhood.

Lonely teenager [Karidje Touré] doesn't feel safe in her neighborhood until she accidentally joins a gang of peers. What makes this film special is that it centers on a girl. Sciamma thus offers a unique perspective on gang life, and the scenes in which the girls dance, sing, or otherwise express their solidarity provide a refreshing perspective. However, there's little depth to it, making this a rather ordinary crime drama.

For me, besides Sciamma's short film, it's one of her weakest films I've seen. That doesn't mean it was a bad film—quite the opposite, in fact—but I wasn't blown away either. It's a film about freedom and carefree living. It centers on the teenage Marieme, growing up in one of the banlieues surrounding Paris. The approach is lighthearted: no poverty, no crime, no drugs…

The focus is entirely on Marieme, who struggles with her dominant brother and her decision to leave school. She joins a girl gang, where a close friendship develops. It's a nice glimpse into life, with some lovely scenes, such as in a hotel or during the prestige battles with other gangs.

The film lacks some momentum and stumbles after halfway through. A bit like Marieme's life, actually. A bit aimless and without a future. The film also reminded me of the equally recent British Rocks (Film, 2019)

I recently saw Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu, and it completely blew me away. Bande de Filles certainly doesn't reach that level, but it's a beautiful film in parts.

Sciamma shows glimpses of her talent, as in the aforementioned scene in Rihanna's Diamonds. A fantastic moment. In several other scenes, she also demonstrates her unparalleled ability to authentically observe girls in their universe, just as she did in Naissance des Pieuvres and Tomboy.

Still, the film lacks some direction and sags a bit towards the end. Not her best work, but still enjoyable.

3.5*
