The Vatican Tapes plot

"For 2,000 years the Vatican has recorded evidence of evil. May God have mercy on their souls."

'The Vatican Tapes' follows 27-year-old Angela Holmes, who accidentally cuts her finger and ends up in the emergency room. An infection causes increasingly strange behavior, and her presence causes the deaths of several of her friends. Priests investigate Holmes and believe a demon possessed her. But when the Vatican has to help banish the demon, it turns out to be a much older and more powerful satanic force than previously thought.

Weak film about possession and exorcism. Not compelling. Not exciting.

The build-up to the horror segments is long and annoying. There is unfortunately no sign of any increasing tension. Not much happens until the finale.

Neveldine incorporates the "authentic" Vatican tapes into the film. It looks good, but the trick doesn't give the film a tension-raising boost either.

The characters are meaningless. They have no content. Even with the members of the clergy, the deepening layer in their character is unfindable. Dudley's acting is quite ok. She never really gets scary, by the way.

The crucial exorcism scenes are ultimately disappointing. There is no exciting fight. Too restrained. More religious circus theatre would have been possible.

Weak ending.

Mediocre movie, nothing new, an exorcism imitation, nothing more.

A chewed-up content that director Mark Neveldine gives just enough energy to not fall through the ice. His direction delivers a number of action-packed moments that are nicely captured, which gives The Vatican Tapes a certain degree of uninhibitedness. Of course, the really hard violence is dutifully kept out of the picture, but the pace is good and therefore also the entertainment value. That compensates to a limited extent for the bad acting and the boring start. Neveldine hardly deviates from the well-known horror paths, which means that the build-up is not always very stimulating for horror fans. The finale also uses bad computer effects a bit too much, but otherwise it is entertaining and is delivered with enough dedication. Not bad at all for once.
