Solid.

Expected a bit more, Ochiai often delivers slightly freaky things, but this film adheres very well to the design of the original. Chopped up story around several characters who have to deal with Toshio and his entourage.

The story is mainly an "origin story", so a bit too explanatory, because it takes away part of the mystery. Can't quite place it in the series, but that's probably because it's been a long time since I saw the original films. As far as I'm concerned, it could just be a reboot of the original.

It also lacks a bit of tension. Just a bit too slick, and also a bit too familiar territory. Yet I also just feel like Shimizu's direction was a bit tighter and creepier.

All in all, a nice sequel that adheres closely to the pattern of the original films. The question is whether it adds much, it's not really scary, but there are a few nice scenes in it, which occasionally refer to previous parts ( the highlight is the camera shot when hearing Kayako turns to the stairs, but doesn't find her there).

3.0*

At the beginning of this millennium, the white Toshio could still make me nervous. It had never been seen before, and it was creepy. But after nine parts (six Japanese, three American) they repeat the old trick again. Almost laughable. A guy like that is no longer scary for the seasoned horror fanatic.

Yet he is once again given the leading role, together with his father and mother, whom we have seen so often in previous parts. I can't post it all anymore either, but I lost the thread years ago. In my opinion, you don't need to have seen the predecessors to follow this, and without prior knowledge this might taste good too. In this way, the recycled story and the repetitive scares are not noticeable.

I could predict certain scenes like this, because some scenes are just copies from parts three and four. Or maybe it was five and seven. A few original scenes may have been successful, but that does not outweigh the long-winded remainder. There is quite a bit of wear and tear on the formula and I am afraid that this will not change in the coming years.

Five years after the previous film project in this series, director Masayuki Ochiai takes over and retells the origin story. The Beginning of the End therefore forms a whole that copies some horror scenes from previous films and manages to improve them left and right, but also delivers little innovation. It is especially the finale that stands out well, the rest of the film is a somewhat boring affair because as a viewer you are most likely already familiar with this story. The acting is not very special and supernatural threats such as Toshio can hardly be called intriguing, fortunately this film only lasts 90 minutes. It's a shame that they didn't just put together a continuation, now you have more of the same. However, enthusiasts will probably appreciate it more than I do.
