For me, Craven remains an interesting director, with masterful highs (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, New Nightmare) and sometimes disastrous lows (Cursed, Swamp Thing, Scream 3). In my opinion, the productions from the 1970s that he started with (Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left) were somewhere in between. This third film by the American horror director from the 1970s unfortunately leans most towards the second category: The low points...

Summer of Fear fails in many different areas. The script is a mess and the dialogue is of a particularly low soap level. And the acting is also very bad; Linda Blair's performance is pretty worthless, the father is really hilarious and the scenes with Fran 'can't act' Drescher would have been better for someone to get a pair of scissors. In addition, the film is full of ridiculous and extremely laughable moments; Cars catch fire before they even get close to the roadside. Partly because of this, the film largely feels very amateurish and it becomes increasingly clear that the film has not stood the test of time.

Yet the film has a charming layer about it. The somewhat strange 70s atmosphere comes through very strongly at times and the film sometimes does this quite well. There are also a few other funny and amusing moments, but unfortunately not enough to make it a good thriller. At first I wanted to go for one and a half stars, but on second thought I decided to make it two very small stars. Clearly remains one of Craven's least and in terms of quality it can best be compared in terms of quality with The Swamp Thing, which he made a few years later.

2 very small stars.

Not the best performance from Craven, although it has a strange charm that undoubtedly has something to do with that time. It ensures that this TV film does not completely fail, but at the same time it gives the feeling that you are watching some cheap soap opera.

If it is not the setting, then it is the music or the complications surrounding the family that are to blame. The sequence where Rachel passively watches how Julia has become popular with everyone, accompanied by a cheesy tune, no, that's actually not possible. Something is dormant.

That's true, but you can hardly call it paranoia or suspense. If something involving cars is the most striking event in a horror movie, maybe that says something. Fran Drescher's voice is certainly scarier than the glued-on eyes. A lukewarm job.

Mid-Saturday evening I went to Wes Craven and it's a bit of a guilty pleasure that I don't always like but I certainly can't resist. And as is often the case with Craven, it cannot match his best, and is more often hilarious than scary, and that is no different with this Stranger in our House or Summer of Fear.

It is quite funny in phases, the build-up is slow and careful, and of course the idea is to create an atmosphere and situation in which everything seems possible, but it remains unclear whether it is all a coincidence or whether there is more to it. And within that precarious balance, Stranger in our House has several times the tendency to fall into a kind of cheap melodrama, in combination with overacting, a cheap-sounding soundtrack, in short, a soap-like appearance. The central focus, of course, is Rachel's adolescent life, which is slowly disrupted with a number of strange events, the suggestion of some voodoo hoodoo shit and a short role by Fran Drescher, and damn, if the eardrums are not ravaged by her The Nanny-like chatter, that is still a nice woman.

But it is clear that it is just not enough, it is all fun, but it is certainly not exciting or very interesting until the half/first hour. But when Rachel investigates and the mystery becomes larger, the family clearly falls further and further into the clutches of the niece, and the question becomes whether we are actually dealing with the niece, which is predictable, the The film is a bit better and more fun towards the end. And after the not very interesting beginning, the film really picks up its pace towards the end, with which the film still manages to achieve a passing grade. This will certainly not be a top rating, but all in all it was quite an entertaining film, so three stars for the effort
