The first half hour I was just annoyed by the infantile whining between our two lovebirds. Fortunately, the film then turns and becomes a lot more interesting. The concept is not very original, but the execution is atmospheric and mysterious enough to intrigue. The choice to give little further explanation only facilitates that.

It could have been a bit more crazy for me, a bit more intense. Furthermore a more than nice genre work that starts a bit dull, but gradually gains in quality. 3*.

Not bad. A kind of slow burner that tries a bit too hard to get to know the two. I didn't like this couple that much and then it takes quite a while before there is some tension in the relationship. That works out better. Bea changes after a night of walking and since you as a viewer are more or less in the same position as Paul, that becomes a bit more and more uncomfortable. The kind of helplessness that is palpable and it still has something disgusting in the offing. The finale is perhaps a bit too tame, but the conclusion works out well. Another bit of explanation would have really killed the film. What Janiak can still be blamed for are a few short flashbacks to something that was seen earlier in the film. A bit more trust in your audience would be nice, Leigh.

Charming indie film.

One that doesn't reveal from the start from which angle we should expect disaster and even when it becomes clear what the truth is, there is still enough uncertainty. For me, these are plus points; it gives the film a mysterious touch that remains intact long after the film and may continue.

The film takes its time before anything actually happens, and even then only in small doses. First, it invests in the newlyweds. They are staying at the family's vacation home for their honeymoon and have that newlywed-can't-keep-your-hands-off-each-other dynamic. When this dynamic starts to go wrong after a sleepwalk in the woods, it becomes increasingly clear that something is not quite right with Bea.

It turns out that the wife is under the control of an unknown group of (alien?) entities thanks to an implant and seems to move like a puppet à la Invasion of the Body Snatchers. She tries to imprint the details of her personality as a human being on herself, but it doesn't take long for husband Paul to realize that his brand new wife is not herself.

It’s not just the horror of the body snatch (or even the body horror from her snatch) that’s supposed to scare us; there’s clearly a sense of purpose, the tragedy of a love that threatens to fall apart. I didn’t find that as poignant as perhaps intended, especially since I’ve never really found the chemistry between the two to be convincing or infectious, perhaps even a little irritating.

I found the film as a whole very atmospheric and the gradual reveal while maintaining mystery at the end I thought was perfect, but the film also continues to simmer on a medium-high heat and never really manages to get going, which makes the whole thing a bit toothless. 3*
