Dreamworks has chosen to turn this animation into a real children's film (up to age 10). That's their right, but it does make the film a pretty weak vehicle when you've outgrown that age a bit.

In any case, the voice work is already mediocre. Rihanna has to stick to singing, because she can't speak sincere emotion. Parsons is especially annoying and the rest is nowhere special. The animation is also not great or very special. Colorful, but especially ugly colorful. The story is nice, as are some themes, but again too little is discussed (it remains a film for 10-year-olds after all). But any emotional involvement with the characters never comes. This is due to the voice work mentioned, but also because the Boov Oh is once again presented as the club's little boy. Preferably with a few loose baby teeth. I also quite like Rihanna's music, but it often doesn't fit the movie and it comes up too often, and her voice is too striking to put it in a movie so often.

The movie is also just too long. A little Disney clocks in at 70 minutes, and that's often enough. This film just keeps dragging on, also because many scenes in between are simply unnecessary, or at least feel unnecessary. 1.0*.

Wow, I really expected Home to get much better marks (both here on Moviemeter and on IMDB). I personally haven't enjoyed an animation film as much as I did with Home. In my eyes, this movie had it all. Endearing main character (Oh) with an excellent voice actor (Jim Parsons) and a well-run story. Lots of humor too. Really, I really thought this was such a wonderful movie. Luckily I didn't go by the reviews...

4.5*

9/10 (IMDB)
