The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden plot

The film weaves together an unsolved 1930s murder mystery with stories of today's Galapagos pioneers, a handful of Europeans, Americans and Ecuadorians who settled the islands between 1930 and 1960. This creates a quest for paradise. What happens when a handful of individualists settle on the same small island and set out in search of their different, and sometimes contradictory, concepts of Eden.

A surprising amount of visual material is available of the main characters in this story about the German doctor with writing ambitions, Friedrich Ritter, and his patient, Dore Strauch, who decide to leave their homes and family behind for a life on Floriana, a remote, then uninhabited island in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. After interested scientists visit, the island attracts media attention, which attracts the eccentric Baroness von Wagner and her two lovers. Tensions soon rise. Geller and Goldfyne use excerpts from diaries and a published biography to paint a picture of these people's lives and solve a mystery. The voice acting is excellent, and the additional insights from current Galapagos Island residents are valuable, but it's certainly not very exciting.

An enjoyable documentary about the remarkable history of the inhabitants of the island of Floriana and the mystery that still surrounds it. Featuring quite a bit of original footage, as scientists regularly visited back then—and apparently, they too were captivated by the absurd story that unfolds.

It's a shame the documentary spins too many threads to fill its running time, but on the other hand, it remains honest. It's a nice background or preparation for Ron Howard's new film, Eden (2024). Which, as I understand it, sticks closely to the known facts and therefore ties in nicely with what the documentary reveals.

There's still quite a bit of material available—just about everyone seems to have written a book. But honestly, I think I've had enough for now.
