Listen Up Philip plot

Philip is full of anger as he waits for the publication of his second novel. He feels excluded from his hometown by the constant crowds and noise, the deteriorating relationship with his girlfriend and photographer Ashley, and his own indifference to promoting his book. When Philips idol, Ike Zimmerman, offers his secluded summer cottage as a retreat, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject: himself.

A mediocre comedy/drama film...

Fair story...

Decent acting...

Too fast camera movement...

Reasonable picture (no HD available)...

Reasonable sound

(no Dolby Digital present)...

Not worth it...

A bit like a Woody Alleen film (wealthy people wallowing in self-pity, everything provided with an explanatory voice-over). But where Woody peppers this kind of film with relativizing humor, you become quite depressed by this film. Schwartzman is a talented actor but plays his role so one-dimensionally unsympathetic that you will soon not care how he fares. Incomprehensible that this lout gets so much attention from the necessary female beauty (whose presence ensures that I give half a point extra than actually needed for this film)

A mediocre talkie that literally comes to nothing.

Wonderfully cynical film with beautiful mono and dialogues, a perfectly cast Schwartzman and a great pace throughout the film. Here and there some small things that started to bother, and in the end it is often the same trick that is shown but I still enjoyed it very much.
