The French expression "On n'est pas sorti de l'Auberge" means "We have not been able to pull ourselves out of the difficult position we were in" and there are many in a difficult position in this very typical French Vaudeville with an irresistible Jean Lefebvre as the leading, but above all the direct object, among the many amusing developments that occur.

Naughty, mischievous humour, never gross or cheeky and best enjoyed as relaxation.

This movie was recently added to Netflix, so I thought I'd grab it. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by this comedy, which is a lot more enjoyable (and above all funnier) than most comedies by French director Max Pécas. He is of course best known for his soft-erotic films in the early 1970s, but halfway through that decade he focused on making comedies, often with a naughty edge and always with the necessary nudity.

Pécas often works with the same actors and in this film we see some veterans again, such as the beautiful Sandra Barry who plays the girlfriend of the actor François. In the 1970s she played in several films by Pécas, then still under her name Sandra Julien. Actress Oliva Dutron, who plays the chambermaid, is already acting here in her 3rd Pécas film and would play in several Pécas films after this. A young Annemieke Verdoorn can also be seen briefly as a fashion model and has played in various Max Pécas films at the start of her career. Pécas always had an eye for female beauty anyway and the ladies in On N'Est Pas Sorti De L'Auberge are certainly not a punishment to watch.

The humor is often clownish, but unlike Pécas' other comedies, the irritating, stereotypical characters are fortunately omitted here. Protagonist Lefebvre is on a roll as the little temper frog, who treats his staff like shit and also cheats his fiancé with other women on several occasions. And he still knows how to talk about it amazingly. In the current era of #MeToo, you often view scenes like this with a vicarious sense of shame. But Pécas brings it all with a wink and also shows several times that adultery is not good.

On N'Est Pas Sorti De L'Auberge is a surprisingly fun comedy.
