“If you are so innocent, why do you run?”

Child 44 has a lot of problems and makes a messy impression, but the actors and the atmosphere created by Daniel Espinosa make up for a lot. Espinosa wants to combine too many genres, and Child 44 is a thriller, a murder mystery, a romantic drama, a historical story and also a straight family drama. It's too much of a good thing, and the murder mystery and thriller element in particular are snowing under. The casting of Paddy Considine as a Russian serial killer doesn't help. The role of Oldman is too small (and redundant), and only Hardy and Rapace manage to impress a bit.

What was I ever looking forward to this movie, what a nice movie it will probably be for a layman, but what a f*cking drama it is if you are a connoisseur and lover of the book like me.

To get straight to the point, the film loses itself from the start in too many things to make a real impression. To a certain extent it is even dull and dull although a lot of effort is put into the background, decor and style. The biggest pain point for me is the fact that the book itself develops magnificently into a denouement in which the killer turns out to be Leo's brother.Something that is not played out in the film. In any case, the story is completely skewed with all the other worries, so much so that the case itself only seems to get some attention after an hour. The outlined battle with Nikitin is therefore also different and the ending that feels forced makes no sense at all. It completely ignores the denouement that makes the book so great. Simply incomprehensible.

Hardy also does his best just like Rapace, Kinnaman is also fine, but as far as I'm concerned it's carrying water to the sea. Besides a plot and denouement that lost in advance, the film is too stuffed with other things. The war hero, the Brodsky issue, the children, betrayed several times, the failing relationship with Raisa... it's too much, too woolly and never really impresses. And again, why doesn't the story just make sense when you put so much effort into everything else…?

No, Child 44 is a huge failure for me and a film that I have been dreading seeing again for quite some time. It may be obvious. This deserved better.

The Soviet Union tries to sweep the existence of a child murderer under the rug to raise the standard of perfect condition. When the already little-loved former Russian agent Leo Demidov [Tom Hardy] decides to unmask the killer on his own, he encounters a wall of resistance that puts his reputation, his life and that of his wife [Rapace] in danger.

Hardy and Rapace are fine and there is good supporting work from Gary Oldman and Paddy Considine, but this unbalanced mix of political thriller and murder mystery never really picks up steam. This is mainly due to the large amount of dialogue and Espinosa's less dynamic directing.
