"Bing hits the high notes! Joan hits the love notes! You'll hit a happy note... in this king-sized muscial wonder!"
Salesman Virgil Smith wants to sell his record players in Austria, just before the First World War. He mainly wants to sell one to Emperor Franz Joseph, but at first his guards think he is carrying a bomb. He meets Countess Johanna von Stolzenberg and the two fall in love. The emperor is against this and decides to take action.

After seeing Wilder's first seven films, this one feels like an odd one out. A musical that refuses to become a musical, and a comedy that lacks real wit and wit. Yet, it has plenty of worthwhile moments. As Hugohei already said: even the lesser films are worth watching for fans.

Mediocre. Very dated overall, with somewhat stiff acting. Crosby might have a good singing voice, but he's not really an actor, though he did have a surprising amount of chemistry with the dog. Fontaine isn't at her best either. Overall, it's easy to watch, but it never really gets funny or enjoyable. And it never becomes a true musical either. It's otherwise rather childish, but I'd rather see Wilder film in black and white. 2.5 stars.
PS: Would the Austrians also be offended by the way they're depicted here as yodelers? These days, there are groups that are already prancing around.
