De Behandeling plot

Detective Nick Cafmeyer has the looks, is smart and makes a career. But a heavy shadow hangs over his life and relationships. Nick has struggled with the unsolved disappearance of his brother Bjorn since he was 9 years old. On Nick's instructions, his neighbor Plettinckx, a sex offender, was interrogated and released. Plettinckx still lives in the same neighborhood as Nick after all these years and takes pleasure in taunting him. It keeps weighing on Nick. The only woman who knows about this drama from his past is his boss, the slightly older Danni. Danni is hesitant to bring Nick into another troubling case: a couple has been held captive for three days by an intruder. There is no trace of their 9-year-old son Robin and the perpetrator. Nick takes the lead in a breathtaking manhunt.

In itself a fascinating interesting thriller that immediately sets the tone with the flashback to the missing brother of protagonist Nick so many years ago. The treatment isn't such a fun movie because of a raunchy subject of pedophilia. Well presented with several subplots - links not always clear everywhere and sometimes made needlessly complex, but it does keep the momentum in the film. Tension (atmosphere) trumps and that lasts for almost the entire film. Also a hint of Saw to be found with the chained victims, with the difference that they are (literally) left undisturbed here. It is unclear how the opening scene came about and why the perpetrator left the house. Later in the film, there seemed to be no intention to leave the house, hence.

Also a bit cliché with the lone wolf inspector who investigates on his own. The film does not include questioning of suspects. There is no real focus on "who did it?", but focuses entirely on Nick's detective work. I also found his reaction to the swim teacher who was seemingly ignored when he spoke to him. That troll story was also bizarre, especially from the mouth of the children (who were not yet victims).

Geert van Rampelberg does well as a raw inspector, it's a new refreshing face for once instead of De Bouw or Desmedt. Not always believable (including the role of bullying Plettinckx, for example) but fascinating to follow in its entirety. The absolute ending is again poignant, fitting perfectly within the picture.

A strong thriller that never let go of me.

The tension is there from start to finish.

Good choice to cast lesser known actors and actresses.

With the exception of Ingrid De Vos and Michael Vergauwen, there are few familiar faces in it for me.

It's certainly not all perfect, MM user Ebenezer Scrooge already mentioned the mistakes in his review, but nevertheless it works as a whole.

An oppressive film, with a poignant theme, as rancid as can be, which lingers.

This is a pretty tense but also fierce thriller about a detective who is looking for a pedophile who takes a family with children hostage because of maniacal delusions. There are certainly vague parts in the film that seem improbable and unbelievable. Not only in the story, but also in the behavior of the detective. Nevertheless, the film is very exciting and is therefore captivating until the very end. Not even my kind of movie, but I liked it.
