Dong Fu Ren plot
When soldiers are billeted in a small village in remote southwestern China, sparks fly between Mrs. Tung (Lisa Lu), a respected member of the community, and officer Yang-kwan (Roy Chiao). Mrs. Tung does everything she can to uphold family name and honor after her husband's death, ignoring her feelings for him. She does ask him to teach her class and village, with Yang-kwan secretly leaving love poems in the books for her. Wei-ling, Mrs. Tung's daughter, is also charmed by the newcomer, and to avoid gossip, Mrs. Tung agrees to marry Yang-kwan and Wei-ling, even if it means that her own feelings will remain unrequited.
