"Some Fights Are Bigger Than The Ring"

When Muhammad Ali was called up to fight in the Vietnam War, he was at the peak of his boxing career. However, Ali refused to go to Vietnam because of his religious beliefs, which led to a protracted legal battle against the US justice system, all the way to the Supreme Court. Justice Harlan, a respected lawyer with 15 years of experience, finds himself at odds with the Court when his perspective is challenged by the contemporary ideals of his new clerk.

Recently deceased, Muhammad Ali, and recognized by the American president as one of the most outstanding figures of the 20th century.

TV film, featuring a star cast, deals with the lawsuits provoked by Ali and the opinions and battles (including behind closed doors) that were fought about them.

Archive footage is of course frequently present and the historical background can be fascinating, but the film never really captivated me.

Veteran Christopher Plummer makes a very strong impression. We are used to him.

Reconstruction of the Supreme Court hearings after Muhammad Ali appealed his conviction for draft refusal. Stephen Frears wisely uses archive footage to sketch Muhammad Ali's situation and opinion. Christopher Plummer and Frank Langhella are the (acting) heavyweights in the cast, in which Ed Begley Jr. is also convincing as the man who wants to study the Ali file to death and therefore has difficulty reaching a decision. But since the verdict of the historic case will be known to most viewers, this is not so interesting from a dramatic point of view, despite the solid acting.

Good film about Muhammad Ali who refused to fight in the Vietnam War because of his religious convictions. A somewhat dry, but otherwise solid and also entertaining historical film. Muhammad Ali is not played by an actor here, but is frequently in the picture through good use of archive material. Furthermore a cast with quite a few well-known names. A small 3.5 stars.
