Goro Saionji (Sonny Chiba) is a roving, thrill-seeking detective. While investigating a suspicious plane crash in the Red Valley, he uncovers a plot between some members of the yakuza and a property developer. The goal is to drive an old farmer off his land to build a large holiday resort. Determined to help the old farmer and his daughter, Goro takes on the criminals.

Fukasaku, the director of Battle Royale, has been around for a while. So has Sonny Chiba, icon of Japanese exploitation. This was a very different kind of film in their early career. An easily digestible adventure/Western for all ages, in which a young detective investigates the suspicious crash of a small plane in a mountain valley. In the valley, farmers are being pressured by an investor. It's an easy watch thanks to the simple story and the use of 1950s Western clichés. Incidentally, there's another "Drifting Detective" film from the same year: Black Wind in the Harbor.
