Based on the memoirs of Marjorie Rawling [Mary Steenburgen] who in 1928 left home, hearth and husband [Jay O'Sanders] to live in the remote country village of Cross Creek in hopes of finding the peace and inspiration she needed. to launch her writing career. The film how Marjorie has to adapt to the circumstances, the culture and the inhabitants, but also how the people she meets inspire her to write her best literary work to date.

Rawling is best known to the general public for The Yearling from 1938, later an Oscar-winning film starring Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman. 'Cross Creek' doesn't seem to be true at all, but what you don't know doesn't hurt, of course. The locals are generally well portrayed, with a charismatic Peter Coyote as a love interest and Rip Torn as a burly neighbor who becomes the central figure in Rawling's first book. Malcolm McDowell - Steenburgen's husband at the time - has a nice cameo as Rawling's publisher. The episodic structure of the film means that the most dramatic moments do not come out completely. Leonard Rosenman's majestic score makes up for a lot, but this only slightly rises above mediocrity.

Biopic about the writer Marjorie Rawlings ("The Yearling"), who leaves the hectic pace of civilization behind to focus entirely on writing novels in the Florida interior. The people in her new environment are her source of inspiration. A charismatic film with an insight into daily life in a remote area in Florida about a hundred years ago, framed by images of the beautiful surroundings.
