Many users here have issues with the fact that there is no music from Hendrix in the film, while he had already released three singles and one album ready by the time the film ends. But hey, that's the film's choice - the makers wanted to show the beginning of his London period, and in my opinion they succeeded quite well, with a nice period picture as a background for the excellent performance by André Benjamin, who, according to the IMDb trivia page, admitted that he could barely play the guitar but mimes very convincingly to the playing of veteran master guitarist Waddy Wachtel. Indeed, we hear nothing of the music that made Hendrix famous, but what we do see him play (as an accompanist, during rehearsals with Redding and Mitchell and on stage with Baker and Bruce) makes it clear what a talent he had. For the later period (so from the release of Are you experienced up to and including his early death) we will have to wait for another film, but I did see the Hendrix as I know him from film footage, biographies and especially his unforgettable records, thanks again to Benjamin who portrays an extremely good-looking (and sounding) and very credible Hendrix.

I recently read the Jimi Hendrix biography and was curious about this biopic. I immediately noticed that the score was quite low, while some reviews were quite positive. The film also deviates from the standard biopic. John Ridley refused to allow the Hendrix family to participate, and in doing so also forfeited the rights to his songs. Anyone waiting for a 'best of' Hendrix may be disappointed. Especially because the well-known performances of Woodstock and Monterey Pop are not included.

But that's what makes it so interesting. We get to see Hendrix in his early days, in which he already makes progressive music. But doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Those who do see the talent are actually mainly other people from the music world. From Chas Chandler who becomes his manager, to Eric Clapton who acknowledges his superior and The Beatles who are blown away.

André 3000 is very well cast and brings a Hendrix as I imagine him after photos or video clips and his life story. A film that takes time to create atmosphere, nicely dressed with costumes and setting. And then a 60s filter over it.

I can well imagine that the film is less popular. It is not the epic rise & fall biopic that we usually get with some hits that we know. But a nice life story made with love. If there is ever a new biopic about the guitar icon, it will have to come out strong.

Flashback to the years 1966 and 1967 in which Jimi Hendrix [André Benjamin], encouraged by Linda Keith [Imogen Poots], a model and the fiancée of Keith Richards [Ashley Charles], adjusts his ambitions and swaps the almost empty halls in the US for the lively rock scene in London. Benjamin (also known as Andre 3000 of hip-hop duo Outkast) impresses by approaching Hendrix's playing style, facial expressions and speaking style in such a way that you almost forget you are watching an actor. A fascinating insight into the life of a man who (like his colleague and good friend Eric Clapton) could not thrive in a world where big money and not necessarily the music comes first.
