It's hard to grasp that the extremely misogynistic story on which this film is based was written by a woman. I've never read the book, and I don't feel the need to after watching this almost continuous parade of bare breasts, male chauvinism, and whips that miraculously leave no trace.
The far from exciting film takes itself far too seriously. But… Corinne Cléry looks good, even in the few moments she's dressed.

The second film by director Just Jaeckin after the first installment of Emmanuelle—and that was pretty much the worst of the entire series. And I don't find this film convincing either. I haven't read the book, but a quick glance at Wikipedia reveals the same flaw as Emmanuelle: it's a kind of adolescent version of the story, leaving only the nudity, while the motive remains hidden, forgotten. And perhaps worst of all, the blind adoration for Sir Stephen, while he portrays the ultimate dead-eyed officer.
Corinne Cléry, in the lead role of O, is undoubtedly stunning, but the images are largely not quite so. The foggy soft focus, with a thick layer of Vaseline on the lens, quickly irritates—not that it obscures anything, but it's simply so ugly that it's distracting. The same goes for many of the locations, where the frequently recurring faded green irritates me immensely; it's just not quite right.
It's a shame, because aside from the dull story, that could have made the film somewhat interesting. But even that opportunity is wasted. What remains is an incredibly tedious mess of complicated stuff that just won't get interesting. What a waste of time and talent—I never thought I'd say that about an Udo Kier film.
