Isten Hozta Örnagy Úr plot

During World War II, Lajos Tóth was a fire chief in a remote farming village in northern Hungary. He is delighted with the request from his son, who is fighting at the front, to provide temporary shelter to his military commander so that he can recover from a nervous breakdown. The major in question shows strange behavior during his stay with the Tóth family, but mother Mariska and daughter Ágika let it come over them with a smile. Slowly but surely, father Lajos is becoming irritated about the insufferable officer…

Farce about an overwrought army officer who terrorizes a simple family with his dominant and irritating behavior. The film starts very well and also has a number of funny moments, but gradually loses quality due to a lack of new developments. The second part is too much more of the same.

I wouldn't call it a farce. It does border on black comedy. The denouement is certainly not a thigh-slapper. And when the postman ignores the telegram about the death of the son of the Tóth family and keeps quiet because a postcard from him has also arrived, it is funny but also serious. The mother still prays for his safety in church.

The script is a satire on the authoritarian 1930s and 1940s in Hungary. A serious undertone. The major should probably introduce Miklós Horthy. The admiral without a ship who collaborated with Germany in World War II. The major in this story arrives in the picturesque village tired and irritated, enthusiastically greeted by the Tóth family and the fire brigade, but after a good night's sleep he misses his army. At least he needs subordinates who will carry out his orders and listen to him. The entire village can enjoy the musings of the major who has made cutting and folding cardboard boxes his life's work. Every country should make boxes. In the Netherlands round boxes like the shape of the cheeses. The French with boxes in the tricolor. Germany obviously has the most beautiful and largest boxes. The Russians, after they have been defeated, are of course allowed to manufacture small boxes.

The Tóth family is in despair when the major suddenly returns after his departure.

Very well acted and quite funny. That's why it gets a big 4 stars.
