Beautiful little film by the strongly debuting Ritesh Batra about two lonely souls who seek affection in an unusual way in the teeming metropolis of Mumbai. A sober story that touches you deeply in all its simplicity. Not least because of the excellent acting. The chastened Irrfan Khan is of course not ready for his test piece, but the unknown to me Nimrat Kaur is a true revelation. She really plays the stars of heaven.

A little gem.

Dabba is an understated film about incorrectly delivered lunch boxes. A woman who lovingly prepares lunch boxes for her husband every day discovers that another villain is running away from her preparations. The man's love goes through the stomach: it applies to her husband who hardly pays any attention to her, not to her kitchen and not even to beget some more offspring. Making lunch boxes, however, boosts her self-esteem by giving attention and recognition through secret notes. The messages on the notes reminded me of my childhood: secret notes from a girl you liked. And the man also enjoys it: wary of anyone who might be reading along, he enjoys this form of communication.

Pretty repetitive course of the story in the end, but Dabba gets away with it. Partly because of the beautiful message of affection in a world of loneliness. Fine direction with the 'absent' aunt, the pushy colleague and the delicious food that made my mouth water. However, I would have portrayed the food even more prominently with close-ups and hip-hop editing.

The train also rumbles through the film as a common thread, literally and metaphorically. Thank you Canvas for introducing me to this endearingly charming video!

A viewing experience I wouldn't have wanted to miss. Messy street scenes from India, overcrowded and dirty train compartments where the Covid virus can undoubtedly fully indulge itself. On the other hand, all the yummy lunchbox dishes that came out in juicy colors made my mouth water. The German blu-ray version of Eurovideo contained a booklet with dishes that appeared in the film. Dahi-Bhalle made and that was delicious!
