Even with all due respect for the amateurish conditions and the financial limitations of making homegrown films, this is still a failed attempt. It's hard to imagine something like this reaching further than local cinemas. Too many shortcomings, both in the story that is presented and in the way the scenes are glued together. Let us have the greatest respect for the actors who seemed to be having a great time in their simple, caricatured roles.

The biggest post-war hit by Edith Kiel and Jan Vanderheyden. The duo had already been in the business for about twenty years and had already navigated a lot of waters: debuting with the classic De Witte and subsequent successes, the dubious war years... After the war, Jan Vanderheyden was persona nona grata in the public life and Edith Kiel came to the fore as a director. Although before that she actually held a lot of artistic strings in her hands. I have now seen a number of films by the duo and Schipperskwartier is a winner in their (popular) genre. A truly successful farce with a brisk pace and no weak moments. The intro also features a camera that glides along the streets and harbour... a beautiful image of Antwerp in the early 1950s. So it can be done in Antwerp and then - even though I understand everything perfectly - I still found it comfortable to turn on the subtitles. Charles Janssens shines in the leading role - for once he had what it takes to carry a film. And the rest of the cast is also great in this comedy. One of the café owner's children is a very young Bruno Schevernels. Worth mentioning is the contribution of Jef Bruyninckx as editor. The star actor of De Witte would later direct his own films, in the image of what Edith Kiel produced. Folksy and farcical.
