During the war between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire, a woodcutter lives in Bohemia. Wandering through the woods, he finds a golden fern, which turns into a beautiful woman. They fall in love, but during a village festival the woodcutter gets drunk and in that state he signs for the army. The woman gives him a shirt and makes him swear never to take it off.
