Beautiful and sad film about a dog who was brainwashed to attack blacks. Humans are often the cause of much misery. Reminds me of the hype around pit bulls and dog fighting. Superb role of Winfield and the white dog. A classic and highly recommended that has stood the test of time well. .Rather a social drama than a horror movie. 4 stars

A film based on a French novel with a long history (previously intended as a Roman Polanksi project) with a lot of drama (Polanski didn't make it because he fled Amerka, the author of the book and his girlfriend both committed suicide). And after a lot of hassle (Paramount wanted "Jaws with Claws" at one point and so that the core would more or less go out) the film ended up with Samuel Fuller (thanks to screenwriter Curtis Hanson, who would later direct LA Confidential). He edited the story and finished it with, as almost always, a low budget.

White Dog is an intelligent, philosophical film about racism in a trashy, well-fitting horror jacket. The screenplay does not follow all the rules and there are some side roads that are not discussed further, but in the light of the film I think that is quite justifiable. Fascinating and thought provoking.

The idiots at Paramount did almost nothing with the film (apparently because they were afraid the film would be seen as racist, some studio bosses are so horribly stupid). It wasn't quite Fuller's swan song (he made two more tiny movies and messed around with scripts) but it was my last movie of this cycle. Certainly not the best, but an honorable ending.
