Because I didn't immediately feel like reading the book, I decided to watch the movie. I didn't think it was a bad film. A film that switches quite a bit between different time periods, but it was easy to follow. The film/miniseries is quite long and I actually found the second part more interesting than the first part. Not that it was completely boring, but there was just more happening in the last part.
The cast consisted largely of unknowns (except John Hurt), but they certainly did not do badly.
Furthermore, I thought it was worth a look. Not wow, but so good for once.

Some time ago I received the book Labyrinth as a gift from a friend. The writing style was not very innovative and the story could have been developed a little better, but the book still stuck. The first reason for this is because the book contains two stories from two different time periods, which flow together in a beautiful way. A second because author Kate Mosse describes a very interesting, but little known story in history: that of the Cathars. When I happened to see that this work had been made into a film, my curiosity overcame my skepticism and it was time for a viewing.
First things first: an excellent choice to turn this into a miniseries. Two parts of an hour and a half are perfect to ensure that there was enough room for a thorough film adaptation, the 'mandatory' break is a good remedy to ensure that things don't drag on. The original story is followed quite faithfully. The ending felt a bit rushed, but overall the transition to the small screen went quite well. I didn't expect much from the camera work and that turned out to be right. They usually didn't get much further than portraying the actors, but that is of course not a real disaster in these types of productions. Although the beautiful Carcassone could have been a little more prominent in my opinion. The acting varies from decent to bad, with the main characters fortunately falling into the first category. John Hurt (small role, unfortunately) is a hero, Vanessa Kirby and Jessica Brown Findlay are not annoying as main characters and have the advantage of not looking bad. Not a high flyer, but because those three hours went by surprisingly quickly, it was still enough for a pass. 2.5*

I have read all of Mosse's books and had never seen this two-part film. In any case, it was not disappointing, despite the fact that it is of course impossible to film such a book in such detail in 3 hours. There were some beautiful scenes that flowed from the past to the present and vice versa. In films that contain scenes from earlier times, I always find it a shame that the setting, decors and decoration are often amateurish. This is also the case with this film. Also a shame about some actors who would do better in a theater company. For the rest I thought it was worth watching, especially the shots of the beautiful and mysterious Languedoc landscape.
