Don't expect a concrete story, but prepare yourself for a lot of wonderful, surrealistic scenes shot from the imaginative brain of el maestro.

Is feminism (for or against, who cares) the subject, the impressions that remain after seeing the film are of a purely visual nature.

Of course, Mastroianni is a masterly actor, who swirls innocently and surprised among all that feminine beauty - sometimes adorable, sometimes erotic, sometimes disgustingly rude. The scenes with the hard-working housewife, the portrait gallery, the sleeping place with a view of the storm, the Ferris wheel ..., will stay with me the most.

We are Fellini....

Overwhelming stream of images in which Fellini apparently lets out everything he has ever felt about women, contained in sometimes extremely funny and sometimes painfully poignant scenes and with a splendor of images that I have rarely encountered outside of Fellini's work. As critic John Gould Boyum described it, "fabulous adventures in feeling" that build to a beautiful climax in the clouds, courtesy of a superb Marcello.

When La città delle donne was slammed in Cannes, Andrei Tarkovsky (who was in Rome at the time filming Nostalghia) wrote in his diary that "the papers said that Fellini's last movie was a total disaster and that he himself had ceased to exist. It's terrible, but it's true, his movie sucks." But then, is there a greater contrast imaginable than between Nostalghia and La città delle donne? Fellini and Tarkovsky were once both idols – it's nice how you can still appreciate the work of such opposing filmmakers, but my appreciation for the latter has decreased in recent years and for the former has only increased.

The first forty minutes are good. The idea of the dream scene in 8 1/2 is further elaborated. A man, thoroughly macho though he doesn't realize it himself, ends up in a building with all his former mistresses. However, they do not form a subservient harem, but preach feminist views and rebel against the patriarchal society.

Unfortunately, it gets hit and miss after that. Dr. Katzone is a superfluous character who then also begins to torment Bizet. It is a pity that none of the female characters are well developed, it keeps jumping from one to the next or they are presented as a homogeneous group. The Freudian ending was stolen from North by Northwest. Fans of Fellini must watch him seen, but he is not among his best.
