Charles Bradley: Soul of America plot
The 62-year-old former James Brown impersonator Charles Bradley is followed in the preparations of his (very successful) first own soul album. The film opens as Bradley takes the stage on his 62nd birthday. The wig, the music, the dance moves, the clothes; in everything he is James Brown. For his debut, all those layers are slowly peeled off: for the first time in his life, Bradley can stand on stage as himself. Images of rehearsals and performances are interspersed with an insight into Bradley's daily life. Constantly poor, sometimes homeless, but always full of hope, he dreams of a singing career. He does not complain about his hard life. Enjoy very hard. Finally he has success as himself. Though his infectious dances of joy still betray Brown's moves.
