Kankerlijers plot
In the pediatric oncology department, on the fourth floor of a large regional hospital, three boys are staying who are having a great time. Although there doesn't seem to be much cause for celebration. Nick (14) and Iwan (15) have bone cancer and have both lost a leg. The same threatens to happen to their friend Olivier (16). Between treatments, however, the three have plenty of time to visit other patients, joke with the nurses, and perform all sorts of other tricks. But when Gina, a beautiful 16-year-old girl, is admitted to the ward, the friends' world is turned upside down. At first, Gina completely shuts herself off from the boys' attempts to impress and interact with her. But when Gina's friends fail, she realizes that friendship with the boys is the only cure for the depressing hospital stay.

Kankerlijers, a title with a double connotation, which does cover the film. They try here to provide a heavy subject with a light and comic undertone, which does not work here.
I had great difficulty getting sympathy for the protagonists. Their actions were often annoying and irritating and usually not that funny. Luckily it got better later on. The big problem for me was the credibility of the film. This is mainly due to the way in which the boys can go all out in the hospital, there is hardly any control and the reactions of the staff, management, etc. are also far from credible.
I myself was also in hospital for a few weeks a few months ago, maybe that's why I noticed it much more and it bothered me more. I didn't think the drama was overly developed anyway. Too unbelievable and it remains too superficial. The comedy part is also often not funny, so that Kankerlijers goes wrong in two areas.
It's a valiant attempt to tackle a highly charged subject in a different way, it must be said, but unfortunately it misses the point here.

Easy formula film that tries a little too hard to force the laughter and the tear. It also doesn't help that it compulsively appeals to its teenage target audience with fake rap music and semi-tough boy pranks. Yet at times it manages to hit a sensitive chord with genuinely moving moments between the four boys and the beautiful young lady.

Cancer sufferers: the pilot
Kankerlijers is more of a comedy than a drama film, which is a welcome change for a loaded subject like cancer. The lightness of this film often reminded me of 50/50. However, what I experienced as the biggest drawback when I watched this film was that I felt more like I was watching a series than a one and a half hour feature film. It therefore felt more like a kind of stretched pilot in which Vera van der Horst came to play a guest role. However, the story of the boys left behind felt anything but complete. This could easily have been continued for longer, but then by developing it further into a television series variant. More background on what the boys' lives looked like before they were ill and how the illness affected their lives would have been of absolute added value. Now the characters feel much too superficial and lack the necessary depth. Although you can of course also explore characters in a movie, a TV series felt more appropriate for this.
As a result, I find Kankerlijers difficult to judge. I actually felt thrown into the middle of a story while I barely had background information about the characters and had no idea how they would end. I get the idea of the film's open ending, but this felt a bit too easy and inappropriate in this case. As if the makers didn't really know where they wanted to end up and just drew a line somewhere.
