Account of a social drama that would redraw the Swedish political landscape.

Widerberg introduces a respectable working-class family in the midst of the strike turmoil, who do not simply accept the contrasts with the wealthy employers' environment. Pierre August Renoir...

It is remarkable that in the film, amidst all the seriousness, a lot of humor is incorporated, such as learning the technique to seduce a woman or the Frankenstein imitation, to name but a few.

I find this "Adalen 31" a bit underrated, which nevertheless does a good job of highlighting the historical urge for more social justice. The march scenes are lifelike, stripped of all frills and are impressive. Those who did not know the "Internationale" will now.

What is striking in Widerberg, just like in the recently seen "All Things Fair", is the erratic editing in which scenes follow each other abruptly, without any expected transition. It keeps the viewer on track, I think, and it does not prevent Widerberg from giving us a wonderfully beautiful final scene, an ode to hope, courage and family closeness, even though there are the soap bubbles that disappear so quickly into nothingness...
