After the negative reactions I finally started watching this after a long wait and I have to say that I have seen worse horror films lately (Bad Kids of Crestview Academy, WTF, The Black Room).

The ending may have been predictable, but that's always the case in 80% of horror films.

Still a 6/10 for me.

Moderate.

Recovery is a very by-the-book horror film with little originality. Meanwhile, that no longer seems to be something the audience actively seeks out, and neither does Recovery itself. The result is a simplistic and predictable horror film, but with the right execution, it can still be enjoyable.

Unfortunately, that's not the case here. At least half of the short running time is used for set-up and introductions. The teenagers' acting is decent, but none of them can handle the characters they're given. They're all rather dull characters. Only the banter between them keeps the viewer engaged.

The plot is standard, and the cinematography is even a bit dull. They do try to give the villains some face, especially the guy on the poster is quite quirky, but nowhere near crazy or crazy enough to warrant a good second half. Ultimately, it just lacks some craziness.

The murders aren't particularly gory either, which is a shame, because you wait a good 40 minutes for something that ultimately doesn't really happen. The execution isn't terrible, but in this case, it's simply too safe to keep a little thing like Recovery afloat.

A very simple horror film, with some thriller elements but little suspense. Thanks to its short running time and relatively smooth progression, the film is never tiresome, but otherwise, it lacks character and is far from special. It's a shame, though, because it's easily drowned out by similar, much more disturbing films.

Recovery is one such film in which technology, designed to serve human convenience, is treacherously used against its unsuspecting users. Recovery primarily revolves around the location function on smartphones, which leads to the downfall of several reckless teenagers. Before this happens, the film amply illustrates the teenagers' recklessness through a series of scenes in which they party and use alcohol and drugs.

That's how half an hour of the film's mere 80-minute running time passes. Such an extensive introduction could be interesting if it were to build tension or flesh out the characters. But no. The script offers the viewer only shallow character sketches with no significant vocabulary at their disposal. I wasn't particularly impressed. Not by much else, actually. The images through which the film reaches the viewer are pale and ugly. Furthermore, the rhythm and timing are flawed. Director Darrell Wheat, for example, awkwardly alternates party scenes with a potentially thrilling chase, which slows down the buildup of tension and leaves the chase only potentially thrilling.

When the smartphone finally directs the group of teenagers to a grimy and seemingly abandoned house, things happen that won't surprise even the inexperienced horror viewer. The location, too, holds plenty of suspenseful potential. The dimly lit house, with its ominous hallways, creaking staircases, and locked rooms, is atmospheric, but that atmosphere is barely exploited in the characters' actions. It's a home invasion with tiresome horror scares and a lack of suspense and tension. We're watching a superficially constructed film crammed with predictability. Recovery is a series of missed opportunities.
