But help arrives for Rose in the form of Tadeusz, a former officer in the Polish army and a survivor of the Warsaw uprising, who tries to hide his identity.

Raw drama about the fate of the Mazurs, who were tyrannized in the north of Poland during and in the first years after the Second World War by the Germans, the Poles and the Russians in succession. I recently saw the film Wołyń (2016) by the same director about the atrocities committed in the neighboring region of Volhynia (now Ukraine).
This realistic drama about a widow and the man who comes to her aid is at least as hard. The ruthless and unscrupulous treatment of citizens by various rulers is shocking. The hopeful final scene does nothing to detract from that.

This film really gets under your skin. Unbelievable what people can do to each other. And not just to survive. This film shows that in all its horror. The film also shows the chaos and lawlessness that reigned in Poland in the first years after the Second World War. I knew nothing about the fate of the Mazurians, a German-speaking ethnic group in the south of the former East Prussia, even though I had been there. After the war, the Mazurians were seen as collaborators of the Nazis and were persecuted by the Poles and the Russians. Most of them fled or were expelled to West Germany. Their traces have been virtually erased. It is a beautiful lake area, attractive to adventurous tourists and those seeking peace and quiet. They would be better off not watching this film. An impressive film.
